Vietnam receives emergency aid from the Chinese Embassy/ Chinese Red Cross Society to help people affected by natural disasters

On September 23rd, the Vietnam Red Cross Society, chaired by Mrs. Bui Thi Hoa, held a ceremony to receive urgent support from the Chinese Embassy/ Red Cross Society of China to assist Vietnamese people affected by Storm No.3 Yagi and its aftermath.

Mr. Hà Vĩ, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Vietnam, sent his sincere condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims and the people in the affected areas. Mr. Hà Vĩ said: “Some areas of China have also been affected by natural disasters. The Communist Party, Government, and people of China deeply sympathize with the situation of the people in the affected areas of Vietnam. To support the Vietnamese Government in rescue and disaster relief efforts, the Red Cross Society of China has provided a $100,000 grant to the Vietnam Red Cross Society. I believe that under the strong leadership of the Vietnamese Party and Government, and with the efforts of all levels of the people, including the Vietnam Red Cross Society, the people in the affected areas will soon overcome the difficulties.

Ms. Bui Thi Hoa, President of the Vietnam Red Cross Society, expressed her gratitude to the people and the Red Cross Society of China for mobilizing support for Vietnamese people affected by the storm. Ms. Bui Thi Hoa said: “According to the report of the Vietnamese Government, it is estimated that the damage to property, infrastructure, and agriculture, forestry, and fisheries is over 50,000 billion VND. Therefore, along with the resources from the state budget, the support from organizations and individuals is greatly needed. The support demonstrates the traditional friendship that the Parties, Governments, and peoples of Vietnam and China have cultivated as comprehensive strategic cooperative partners, together promoting the building of a community of shared future; at the same time, it directly supports additional resources for the Vietnam Red Cross Society to contribute with localities and partners to provide timely assistance to help people stabilize their lives soon.

The Vietnam Red Cross Society and the Red Cross Society of China have had a long-standing and effective cooperation. Most recently, in November 2023, the Vietnam Red Cross Society and the Red Cross Society of China signed a memorandum of understanding on humanitarian cooperation between the two national societies for the period 2023-2028, which emphasizes strengthening cooperation, exchange, and mutual assistance in the fields of disaster prevention and response, disease prevention, healthcare, social work, and organizational development; focusing on developing activities between Red Cross societies in border provinces of the two countries,” said Ms. Bui Thi Hoa.

Up to now, the Central Vietnam Red Cross Society has deployed emergency aid in cash and goods worth nearly 10 billion VND to assist more than 10,300 households, equivalent to more than 41,500 beneficiaries, in 15 provinces and cities affected by storm number 3 and its aftermath. Specifically, the Society has provided 3.25 billion VND, 3,200 family packages, 3,300 emergency relief bags, and 100 sets of house repair tools.

Since the launch of the community fundraising campaign “Together with the people in the North to overcome the consequences of the Storm No.3” (on September 7th) until now, through the Central Vietnam Red Cross Society, many organizations, businesses, and individuals have donated a total of 16 billion VND. Of which, the charitable account 2022 of the Vietnam Red Cross Society has received more than 21,000 donations from organizations and individuals both domestically and internationally, with a total contribution of over 10 billion VND. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has issued an urgent appeal to help Vietnamese people affected by the Storm No. 3 and its aftermath, with a projected budget of 4 million Swiss Francs. Currently, some domestic and international organizations, businesses, and individuals are discussing with the Central Vietnam Red Cross Society to implement projects and non-refundable aid to overcome the consequences of the natural disaster.
