Appreciating the visit and work of the IFBDO, President of the Vietnam Red Cross Nguyen Thi Xuan Thu said: Before 1993, in Vietnam, the health sector was responsible for all blood transfusion, mobilization, supply and blood transfusion services, over 90% of blood is taken from professional blood donors, almost no voluntary blood donation. Since 2008, the voluntary blood donation activity has been regulated by the Vietnamese Government as one of seven tasks of the Vietnam Red Cross which is “propagating and mobilizing blood donation; grassroots organization, blood donation resource … ”and the Prime Minister established the National Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation, the Vietnam Red Cross was assigned the Standing Member of the Steering Committee.

After 10 years (2008-2017), voluntary blood donation movement has made positive developments, many campaigns for humanitarian blood donation have been effectively organized such as: Campaign for voluntary blood donation on Tet and the Spring and the Red Festival, the campaign of Summer Red Bloods and Red Journey, Red Sunday, … contribute to transforming the awareness of the majority of people in the blood donation.

If in 2008 the whole country mobilized and received 518,325 blood units, by 2018 the number of receiving units was 1.4 million units of blood. However, the annual amount of blood received only meets the emergency and treatment ranges from 75-80%, there is still lack of blood during Tet and summer. Through working session, the Vietnam Red Cross hopes that the IFBDO will provide technical assistance and expertise, sharing and consulting to develop programs and projects related to blood donation.

At the end of the meeting, the two sides noted initial results in cooperation and implementation of blood activities. On this occasion, the IFBDO presented a Medal to honor the contributions that the Vietnam Red Cross has made in the voluntary blood donation movement.
