International Volunteer Day: Celebrating and spreading the humanitarian values of volunteerism

This morning (05/12/2018), at the National Convention Center, Hanoi, more than 1,000 Red Cross volunteers and employees of Vietnam Livestock Joint Stock Company participated in the International Volunteer Festival on December 5th and award handover ceremony of the “I volunteer” competition.

The program is co-organized by Vietnam Red Cross in collaboration with the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion and the Charity Fund of Vietnam Livestock Joint Stock Company.

This is a chance for every officer, member, youth, Red Cross volunteer and general volunteers to honor and spread the humanitarian values of volunteer movements, highlighting public significance of volunteers have contributed positively and effectively to society; At the same time, propagate the humanitarian values and traditions of the nation, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and humanitarian activities of the Vietnam Red Cross to volunteers and youths. Speaking at the ceremony, Assoc. “For the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in general and the Vietnam Red Cross in particular, volunteers are the soul, the important force contributing. enormous in activities to assist the most vulnerable in all circumstances – from natural disasters to armed conflict situations. Currently, more than 14 million Red Cross volunteers are available to the community. The Red Cross of Vietnam is responsible for directing and organizing activities of the Red Cross volunteers. We are pleased to note that in the past five years the Red Cross Volunteer Movement and volunteers, the number and quality of the Red Cross volunteers is growing, both in quantity and quality. “

As of June 2018, the country has more than 360,000 Red Cross volunteers with more than 4,700 volunteer teams. The form of gathering is mainly Red Cross Volunteer Teams in each field, such as Voluntary Medical Team, First Aid Team, Disaster Response Team, propagandizing and responding to disaster preparedness and response in the event of disaster; counseling, care and support for HIV / AIDS-infected people; volunteering to serve kitchens of love; Voluntary blood donation (blood donation, blood bank), free ambulance, safe taxi; support team; building a medicinal garden, a free clinic; These are volunteer models that are implemented in a variety of innovative, effective and sustainable ways that are highly appreciated and recognized by the community. Many groups and individuals associated with the models of volunteer activities among them have won the National Volunteer Prize such as Red Cross volunteer group for kitchen of love in Can Tho (2015), Red River Han Volunteers Association, Red Cross Association Da Nang (2016), Charity for Kindergarten in Sa Dec, Dong Thap province (2018). At the ceremony, the volunteers participated in the blood donation festival “Sacred Hearts Charity”, the ceremony honoring 25 individuals for typical voluntary blood donation and awarded for the contest “I volunteer”. Especially, at the 5th National Red Cross Volunteer Youth Camp was held in August, 2018, for the first time, Vietnam Red Cross launched the Vietnam Red Cross Volunteer Network with 50 core members as a start for a new development in the Vietnam Red Cross volunteer movement. This is a voluntary group of young people, volunteers who are interested in the activities of the Vietnam Red Cross, programs for the community and society, especially humanitarian activities such as mobilizing voluntary blood donation, training first aid skills, skills to prevent natural disasters, disaster; Priority is given to organizing on-site humanitarian activities, advocating for poor children in schools and the poor in the community, and enhancing the image and position of the Vietnamese Red Cross in the community. Through volunteer activities, young people, aiming to build all members of the Network to become a fast responding knowledgable expert in participating in relief and humanitarian activities in Vietnam and the world. It is expected that in 2019, Vietnam Red Cross Volunteer Network will be officially deployed in 63 provinces and cities, which will certainly help to link and promote humanitarian volunteer activities nationwide more meaningful activities for society.

The theme for International Volunteer Day 2018 in the World and in Vietnam is “Volunteering to build a sustainable community.” On this occasion, the President of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Red Cross has called on the Red Cross volunteers and volunteers and volunteer organizations nationwide to join hands to promote volunteerism, towards a more secure, sustainable and developed community, for a better future.
